Sri Lanka wins bronze medal at '52 World Military Boxing Championship'

Sgt. PBA Bandara of the Sri Lankan Army secured a bronze medal under the weight category of 91 Kgs (heavy weight category) at the 52nd world military boxing championship held in the City of Baku of Azerbaijan.

This was the first occasion a medal was won by Sri Lanka at championship, officials said.

The Championship commenced on 25 Nov and concluded on 30 Nov 2008, with the participation of many other countries including USA, Italy, France, India, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Egypt, Belarus, Netherlands, Ukraine, Barbados, Algeria, Slovenia, Latvia and the host Azerbaijan.

Sri Lanka military boxers displayed excellent skills and spirit throughout the championship for which the Sri Lankan Team was awarded the best 'Sportsmanship cup'.

The boxing championship was organized by the Azerbaijan Defence Ministry under the patronage of the Council of World Military Sports (CISM).

Meanwhile, Maj Gen J. Jayasuriya USP ndu psc and Gp Capt K.V.N.J. Dharmadasa were in the officials of Referees and Judges panel throughout the championship.
